Pelvic Health Therapy: How May It Help You?

By Dr. Grace Hamilton and Dr. Rebecca Compton

What Is Pelvic Health Therapy?

Pelvic Health Therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and bones in the pelvic area. Pelvic health therapy can help a variety of individuals during pregnancy, post-partum, and throughout life. Pelvic health therapy can address pain, tightness, weakness, and bowel/bladder issues.

At Strive2LiveWell Physical Therapy & Wellness, our therapists use pelvic health knowledge in conjunction with comprehensive plans that include manual therapy, self-massage, stretching, mobility training, and strengthening exercises — creating lasting, meaningful results.

How Does It Work?

Muscles in the pelvis can become tight or weak, just like any other muscle in your body. Tight pelvic floor muscles can cause issues such as constipation and pain. Weak pelvic floor muscles can contribute to conditions such as urinary leakage during exercise, sneezing, coughing, and more. Our pelvic health therapists can evaluate the pelvic floor muscles through internal or external examination. Stretches, exercises, manual therapy, and lifestyle changes can improve pelvic-floor related symptoms.

The result: less pain, better movement, decreased bowel/bladder symptoms, and faster recovery!

Who May Benefit from Pelvic Health Therapy?

Those with…

  • Low back pain

  • Sacroiliac joint pain

  • Hip pain

  • Urinary leakage

  • Constipation

  • Diastasis recti or poor abdominal strength following pregnancy

  • Tailbone pain

  • Endometriosis

  • Prolapse

  • Pain during intercourse

Those looking for…

  • Birth preparation and planning

  • Safe exercise guidance during pregnancy

  • Postpartum recovery

  • Return to exercise/sports after giving birth

What to Expect During Treatment

During the initial session, your therapist will perform a comprehensive examination of the low back, hips, and pelvic region. An internal examination (like at the gynecologist, minus the speculum) gives your therapist the most accurate information about your pelvic floor for certain conditions. However, an internal examination is not necessary. Follow-up sessions may include education on daily habits, exercises, stretches, and manual therapy.

All pelvic therapy treatments at Strive2LiveWell Physical Therapy & Wellness are performed by licensed physical therapists that are specialized in pelvic health.

Experience the Difference

Whether you’re recovering from pregnancy/birth, battling chronic pain, dealing with bowel/bladder issues, or just looking to move and feel better — pelvic health may be the next step in your recovery journey.
