Dry Needling: How It May Help You

By Dr. Jay Myerson

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a highly effective, evidence-based physical therapy technique used to relieve pain, decrease muscle tension, and restore optimal movement. Unlike an injection, dry needling uses a very thin, sterile monofilament needle to target trigger points or “knots” in muscles — helping them relax and function normally again.

At Strive2LiveWell Physical Therapy & Wellness, our therapists use dry needling as part of a comprehensive plan that may also include manual therapy, stretching, mobility training, and strengthening exercises — creating lasting, meaningful results.

How Does It Work?

When a muscle becomes tight, fatigued, or injured, it can develop small, hypersensitive areas known as trigger points. These points can restrict movement, cause local or referred pain, and interfere with muscle coordination.
By inserting the needle into these specific points, dry needling:

  • Releases tight muscle bands and improves mobility

  • Increases blood flow and accelerates healing

  • Reduces pain signals by calming irritated nerves

  • Restores balance to the musculoskeletal system

The result: less pain, better movement, and faster recovery.

Conditions That May Benefit

  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain

  • Sciatica and hip tension

  • Knee, calf, or Achilles tightness

  • Headaches and jaw pain (TMJ)

  • Sports-related muscle strains

  • Postural tension or overuse injuries

Dry needling is safe, targeted, and often produces immediate improvement when integrated with other physical therapy treatments.

What to Expect During Treatment

During a dry needling session, your therapist will gently insert a fine, sterile needle into the targeted muscle. You may feel a brief twitch or deep ache as the muscle releases. Mild soreness afterward is normal — similar to post-workout fatigue — and typically resolves within 24 hours.
Most patients notice freer movement and less pain even after one or two sessions.

All dry needling treatments at Strive2LiveWell Physical Therapy & Wellness are performed by licensed physical therapists trained in advanced orthopedic and Dry Needling techniques, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
